They didn’t start (which we did not expect them to) but they did turn over which we took as a good sign. We were also able to tell that the gauges seemed to work for both engines. That was good news also because the wiring for the motors seems ok.

We cut a hole in the floor to check if there was any water in the hull at the back of the boat and there did not appear to be. Most of the stringers we could see seemed to be in good shape except for the one in the middle. It will definitely need to be replaced but the others (two on each side) seemed to be in pretty good shape. There may be areas that need to be fixed but I don’t think they all will need to be replaced.

Mark is going to put a trailer next to the boat so we can start tearing stuff out and putting it on the trailer to haul off. As I posted before, what I thought was going to be a structural problem and was causing a major leak turned out to be a very minor hole. It was covered with about 2 tubes of caulk from the previous owner, so it looked worse that it actually was.

It seems the water was actually getting in around the hatch in the front storage area. There are 2 ports that drain water from area around this hatch and both were clogged and did not drain at all. We got these cleaned out and I think we have the water problem resolved. I removed the depth finder transducer from the bottom which left a one inch hole that allows the water to drain, so either way there will not be any water collecting in the hull for a while.

The next steps should be the easiest. I plan to remove all the light fixtures, switches, outlets, cabinets, etc. Then we will be ripping out the wall coverings and floors so I can get to the stringers in the floor which I expect to have to replace. From there I can start building the interior back.

I found an operator’s manual which provides quite a bit of information on the original Nauta-Line boats. I checked it today because we had a lot of rain over the weekend and it leaks from where the crack is on the aft starboard side of the cabin. The pictures to the right show where the previous owner had tried to putty it.

There was some water in the hull so I ran the bilge pump and got most of it out. I did not realize how much water would get into it when it rained because it had been in a covered marina slip. I would have to cover the entire boat to keep it from leaking because the crack is toward the back in the trough that carries the water off the back of the boat from the front and top. Fixing the crack had always been part of the plan, but it looks like I probably need to move it higher on the to-do list.

I probably will not be able to get to it this week because I am going out of town on Wednesday and will not be back until Sunday. If I do, I will post some pictures of it.

Michael McNeilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01755415839617975117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8223014890041716266.post-49271378659193818312008-02-15T15:49:00.004-06:002008-02-15T16:37:25.823-06:00The Trip Home

My brother, Mark, went with me to look at the boat several months ago. He took a few measurements came back and over the last few months built the trailer we hauled it home on. He was not sure how it would fit, but when we put it on there, it fit perfectly.

Mark, Bennie Chastain and Keith and Howard Bagley went to help me bring it home. We used Keith's bass boat to tow it around to the boat ramp. Howard and I piloted the houseboat while Mark and Bennie waited at the trailer. The only problem we had towing it to the trailer was we got a rope tangled up in the prop on Keith’s boat. We drifted across the lake (it was pretty windy) but when we got on the other side, Keith was able to stand in knee deep, very cold water and untangle the rope. Once we got it to the trailer, we were lucky enough that it went on perfectly the first attempt. We pulled it out of the water, raised the outdrives, tied it down and headed home.

Mark and Bennie were in the truck pulling the trailer, Keith and Howard were the rear escort and I was the front escort. We came all of the way home (about 250 miles) with no major problems. A wheel bearing went out on the right side rear axel of the trailer when we were about 25 miles from home. It was getting dark anyway so we parked it in a parking lot and the next day Mark, Howard and I went back and brought it the rest of the way home.

Michael McNeilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01755415839617975117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8223014890041716266.post-91598865569288136132008-02-15T09:35:00.004-06:002008-02-15T14:40:45.717-06:00Background on BoatAfter looking for quite some time, I found this boat at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend Reservoir in Huxley, TX. I bought it in March of 2007 and it remained at Huxley Bay until last week. The boat is a 1973 Nauta-line. It is 14' wide and 43' long. It sleeps 6-8.

The man I bought it from had started remodeling it and was about half finished. He had rewired and re-plumbed it, but had done so with the intention of it never leaving the marina. The wiring is 110 and the plumbing bypasses the holding tanks. I am going to completely redo the whole thing- new wiring, new plumbing, new walls, and new floors. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I wanted something I could fix the way I wanted.

It has been in the marina at Huxley Bay and has not been started in several years. I am not sure what we are going to get into with the motors. It has twin 225 HP Mercruisers. I expect to completely replace the outdrives, but I am hoping we can get the engines running without too much trouble.

There is a little bit of fiberglass work to do on the aft starboard side of the cabin where it is cracked. Other than a few other scratches and scrapes here and there, the hull seems to be in good shape. There is a little rot in the transom that will have to be repaired. The outside will also get repainted and the hull will be gel coated.

I am anxious to get it completed and in the water, but I am also looking forward to working on it to get it like I want.

In the next post, I will tell about getting it home.Michael McNeilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01755415839617975117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8223014890041716266.post-51509848834764045062008-02-13T18:00:00.002-06:002008-02-13T18:03:29.324-06:00The Starting PointI created this blog to track and publish the work I do remodeling my houseboat. The pictures to the right show the starting point of the boat. In the next few days, I will be posting additional information and more pictures as well as the "plan" for remodeling the boat.Michael McNeilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01755415839617975117noreply@blogger.com0
